Matthew 16:26 is the scripture that I keep displayed on my desk at work. A constant reminder to why I originally chose the field I am in. By trade, I am a Biomedical Equipment Technician… Translation: I maintain and repair medical equipment. It is a very rewarding job in that, I fix things that keep people alive. I know that I am making a difference in people’s lives. The pay is good as well, but working in the healthcare environment, I am constantly surrounded by people who make a considerable amount more than me. People that drive nicer cars than me. People that wear fancier clothes than me. People that talk of houses I can only dream of owning. A constant reminder of everything I do not have…
Whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income. This too is meaningless. –Ecclesiastes 5:10
But what do all these things have in common? They are all just things! As Americans, why are we so focused on acquiring things?!?!?! We are constantly seeking out and buying new smart phones, fancier cars, bigger TV’s, better clothes, nicer furniture, bigger houses, etc. We work our entire lives away, to buy things that we don’t need; things we cant take with us when we go.
For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. -1 Timothy 6:10
There are people among us who will stop at nothing to get these things. Just turn on the local news tonight. Assault, theft, kidnapping, murder: All products of this infatuation with wealth. Greed overwhelms and destroys lives everyday. So where does it end?
No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. -Matthew 6:24
The only place it can end is with you. As your own person you have to make the decision put away material things and seek God. Get out of the mindset of, ” if I just made this much more money, I could afford this.” and ask God daily to show you the path that he needs you to be on. Every day, several times a day, ask God to show you which direction you need to be headed. He will hear you and will never steer you in the wrong way. We only have so long on this world, and we have so much work to do. Life is too short to worry about things.
