FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!

Go mom on you

Five words I heard a lot growing up. It was usually followed with a “When are you going to clean your room!?!” or “How many times do I have to tell you…!?!”. The last-ditch effort to motivate me to obey, before the leather enforcer was brought out. Please don’t take this as scorn towards my mother; she raised four good kids on her own while working a full-time job. She’s a super hero in my eyes. People just all have their limit, and as kids, we got pretty good at finding hers.

for the love of God

But let’s stop for a second and read those five words. For the love of God. Such a powerful phrase that has been brought down to the last thing we use to try to instill some act-right into our children. Hearing it growing up, I never put any thought to its meaning. Looking at it now, it’s almost like we are saying if you’re not going to do it for me, then do it for God’s love. But what is God’s love?

But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.   -Ephesians 2:4-5

This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.   -1 john 4:9-10

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.   -John 3:16

God’s love is never-ending and all-consuming. He sent his only Son into this world, fully knowing exactly what would happen to him. For what? so that we could be forgiven for all of our sins; so that we could have the promise of salvation. EVERYTHING we do should be for the love of God. Maybe that’s what our mothers were subconsciously instilling in us all along. The question of, what would you NOT do for Gods love? For myself, I sincerely hope and pray my answer will always be a firm and confident, “NOTHING.”.
