Once I get done with school, I will be happy. Once I get that first job with my degree, I will be happy. Once I get that new job that pays more, I will be happy. Once I get that new car, I will be happy. Once I get that new house, I will be happy…
So many of us live our lives focused on the destination. We constantly plot, plan and think of new ways to reach our goal. We make sacrifices and focus our attention on the future, often ignoring what is happening in our life today. Meanwhile, time is marching on. We are getting older, our kids are growing and coming of age and the world is changing around us. Some of our relationships and even our faith may be suffering due to the lack of attention as well.
Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? -Matthew 6:25-27
Not to sound like a motivational poster, but life is all about the journey. Everything we ever do in our lives, we will do today. Constantly focusing on the future and what happens next and ignoring what is happening right now is cheating yourself out of precious time. Nobody is going to stop the clock for a few years while we save money for that perfect house. Yes it is important to plan for the future and have goals, but we can’t let those plans overtake our lives. Life is happening right now and right now is the only time we can truly live it.
